Finding my Flock in 2013

When I'm a junior in 2013, I would hope to be asked to speak in Dr. K. Vaneman and Jason Loscuito's Student Success Seminar. I would tell my little sis class of music majors that it all gets better with time. All of the stress that they are going through with just moving out of their parents' house and living some place new is all worth it in the end. It is worth it because you learn who you are and gain this since of freedom that you have never had before. Having a roommate might be a shocking change, but as long as you talk to them and work out your problems and try to be friends, you will be able to check one less stressful thing off your list. When it comes to the music building; Make sure that you do what you are told. I used to not practice at all out side of my lessons or my chorus class. In college you can't do that because your teacher will hand you a piece of music and expect you to know it next time you come in. I had to kick my butt into shape and actually make myself sit down at the piano and practice or listen to recordings of my pieces. Also, always jump at any opportunities. For an example: If a teacher gives an optional review day you should show up even if you want to sleep because sometimes they reward your efforts and give something like a pop extra credit quiz. Last, but not least, make the best out of everything.

  1. I like this post a lot. You're so straightforward and friendly, and I can see that bit of mamma-bear coming out ;) Your advice on what to do about your private lessons is even inspiring me.

Your response to having a roommate was realistic too. I bet half of the girls that want to switch out didn't try very hard to get to know them.

  2. I like what you said about private lessons. I'm taking private lessons on a new instrument, guitar, and I actually have to practice because if I don't, I sound like poop and Dr, Flinn would get mad at me. The freedom thing is so true its almost scary. Even if you don't live on campus, like I don't, you still get that feeling of freedom. Your classes are not all back to back so you have to figure out yourself what you need to do in between those classes. My favorite thing that you said is "make the best out of everything". That is so true and living by that will give people a great life.

  3. I love the fact that practice is key when you're a performance major. I'm not used to making myself practice hard. Sure, I'd practice every once in a blue moon, but in college practice is the best way to improve. Living with a roommate is definitely a change for me; I'm used to having a room to myself, so living with someone else is a big change. Making the best out of everything is vital to a good college experience. Don't take anything for granted! :)

  4. Kayla,
Thank you for your advice regarding roommate issues. Too often, students avoid working through issues and end up missing out on learning about a different person and even themselves.
