Answers for 8-31-10 SSS Blog

I decided to go to college because my mom always wanted her children to live a better life than she did. My mom went to Spartanburg Community College and got her Associates Degree in electrical engineering-a man's job. I say that because she would work at big corporations, but they would put her on 3rd shift so "the woman would be out of sight; out of mind." She quit working in the field she loved because her co workers made her miserable and her kids growing up with their mom asleep in bed while they were at home was not how she wanted us to live. But there wasn't really an issue of me not ever wanting to go to college. I was raised thinking you were supposed to go to college if you didn't want to end up flipping burgers at a fast food joint and actually doing the job that you dreamed of having since you were little.

I decided to go to Converse because ever since I had my first voice lesson at the Lawson Academy when I was in 7th grade, I told my mom that this was going to be the college I ended up at. I learned everything I could about Converse during my 7 years of lessons including buildings, statues, faculty/staff names, etc. Because of that some of the freshman girls have given me the nic-name of the Converse Walking Encyclopedia.

I chose music ed as my major in an ironic sort of way. My original major was voice performance and I wanted to be a private voice teacher as a career in the future. Well, at Dorman High School we have job shadowing day as a junior and I decided to shadow my middle school chorus teacher Lynn Morrow really as an excuse to see her and sing old familiar songs again. I got to the class and she insisted I help her teach by starting with rhythm flash cards and then teaching them a song I knew. Becoming a teacher had never crossed my mind before, but at that moment I changed my major to music education!

And last, but not least: If I had to give up either cereal or sandwiches for the rest of my life my answer would be sandwiches. I'm addicted to cereal and would eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I could, but cereal doesn't contain a lot of nutritious items that one needs to survive. But unfortunately, as a voice student I'm going to have to cut down on my cereal intake because milk creates flem (for those of you that don't know what flem is...it's snot) so I guess I better start becoming addicting to sandwiches shouldn't I?

  1. I totally agree with you on the milk topic, but it is just too good to give up! I have milk every morning, but I guess since I'm singing again, I'll have to put it aside for the sake of my voice. Sigh...

On another note, I know as much about Converse faculty as I do about Physics... And trust me, that's not much! So expect for me to have an occasional question or two... or five :)

  2. Welcome to Converse and our Student Success Seminar, Kayla! It's great that you've reached a goal you've held for so long, and it's always nice to see alumnae of the Lawson Academy here at the College.

As to your blog writing, be sure to proofread and edit a bit more carefully--there are some commas and spaces and such that need to be reconsidered, and the sentence that starts out "She quit working in the field..." is an awfully winding road for your reader to navigate. Oh, and in your third line you need a dash (--), not a hyphen (-).

Again, I'm so glad you're here!
